Manifold Church of England Academy 6th January 2017 - Spring edition 1:

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a good start to 2017.

We have been enjoying listening to the children’s recounts of the festive seasons, especially the delicious treats they left out for Father Christmas!

A special welcome to our new children and their families: Eloise, Joseph and Matthew. We hope you will all be happy and settle in soon.

After school clubs:

Thank you to all those who have returned their forms and money. Please return any forms by Monday 9th January. We will be reviewing the clubs on offer at February half term. We have introduced a cookery club this half term for Early Years and Key Stage one in response to the children’s requests.

Staffing:

Mrs Harris has informed me that she has been given a new sick note until February 10th. We hope she is feeling better soon.

Miss Perry was unfortunately poorly over the holidays and unable to return to school this week. Early years was covered by Mrs Ackers on Wednesday, then Mrs Robinson on Thursday and Friday. Mrs Marchant supported in there each morning.

Next week:

Years 2, 3, 4: Miss Easter is on a First aid course on Monday. Miss Perry will be covering her class for the day.

EYFS: Mrs Robinson will be teaching in early years on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Miss Perry will hopefully be back in properly on Thursday and Friday.

Year 1: Miss Danforth will be teaching year 1 all week with the exception of Thursday morning when Mrs Ackers will be covering.

If you have any questions or concerns, please remember we have an open door policy.

Monies:

A polite reminder, please make sure any monies are sent in in a clearly labelled envelope. Please send this in on a Monday where possible and by Thursday at the very latest.

Homework:

We have decided to purchase Education City homework for the remainder of this academic year. Thank you to all those who provided feedback. Data analysis showed that the majority of children accessed the site. We are aware that some people struggled to access the site due to no flash player. This can be bypassed by downloading puffin. If you are still struggling, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to help. Homework will start again next week.

Uniform:

Thank you for supporting us with our school uniform. Uniform order forms will be sent home next week if you are running short on supplies. Please remember long hair should be tied up and lines cut in to the hair are not permitted.

Birthdays:

Happy birthday to Fred (21st December), Jack G and Mrs Marchant (4th January) and Daisy (6th January)

You’ve heard the saying, time flies when you’re have fun? Well we’ve obviously been having lots of fun as we’ve already reached the end of the first term! We’ve certainly had fun each day looking for Thor (our elf). I think Mrs Trafford will be glad to see him return to the North Pole as he has caused chaos wrapping things up in school and making a mess on some days.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to each and every one of you for the support you have given to me, the rest of the staff, the children and the school community. I have been overwhelmed by your kindness and support. Thank you also for all our Christmas presents. They are very much appreciated.

Message from the Chair of Trustees

As the autumn term draws to a close, the prospect of Christmas celebrations brings a smile to all of our faces and will give us time with our family and friends to recharge our batteries for January.

On behalf of the trustees, I would like to say thank you to everyone involved in the life of the school, for their dedication and hard work in enriching the learning experiences of all children. I would also like to say thank you for the support that we receive from parents/carers, the Church and diocese and the school communities in making a difference to so many young lives.

The New Year brings with it new challenges as the trust continues to evolve. The search for new trustees continues and early in 2017, the governors will be working closely together to aid communication and bring unity.

Finally, from all the trustees, I would like to wish all staff, parents/carers and pupils, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Diane Beardsmore

Governor news

The governing body and trustees met last week to discuss our class structure and vision for the school. As always, our conversations were guided by the children’s needs and interests. Thankfully we are all working with the same aims - to make Manifold the best place it can be and to offer our children the best education. The governing body and trustees have agreed to appoint a third teacher from January This will be in addition to Mrs Harris who is due to return in January, until going to have her baby. As it stands, I am unable to inform you of Mrs Harris’s return date as we are awaiting an appointment from Occupational health to see if there are any reasonable adjustments that can be made to ensure her return is as comfortable as possible. We hope to welcome her back to school soon.

I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Charlotte Hall has been elected as our Chair of Governors. I look forward to working even closer with her in the spring term.

Thank you to all the governors and trustees who give their time voluntarily to support us.

Staffing

We will be restarting our recruitment campaign in the spring term – looking for a teacher to cover Mrs Harris’s maternity leave. Until then, Miss Danforth (a familiar face to some of you) will be joining us in year 1. We look forward to welcoming her back to the school. As always, I promise to keep you updated with developments as soon as is possible. If you do have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email over the holidays. I will not be ‘clocking off’ at 3:05pm today.

Staffing structure from January:

Early years = Mon, Tues, Thurs (AM) and Fri = Miss Perry. Mrs Ackers will be in there on a Wednesday (All day) and Thursday (afternoon)

Year 1 = Miss Danforth

Years 2,3,4 = Miss Easter

As you are aware, Mrs Savage will be starting her maternity leave on the 3rd January. We wish her the best of luck and pray for a quick and pain free labour (I hear many of you asking does such a thing exist?!) We look forward to seeing Mrs Savage and her new alarm clock, sorry, bundle of joy in the new year. Her due date isn’t until February so hopefully she will have a few weeks rest before he makes an appearance. Thank you for all your hard work Mrs Savage. Don’t be a stranger – come back and see us all.

Mrs Marchant will be supporting the children in early years on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning each week.

I would like to publicly thank all the staff for their hard work this half term. I am sure they are all ready to recharge their batteries over the break as they have worked tirelessly to help create a strong school that we are proud of. Thank you all. Enjoy the break.

Nativity

Thank you for supporting our Nativity this year. As explained at the performance, we were set a challenge by our Christian Distinctiveness Advisor to write our own scripts and try to get rid of the Christmas hype and stereotypical images of angels with fluffy wings and tinsel. It was a big challenge but as always, we gave it our best shot. We hope you weren’t too disappointed with our toga style costumes!

Afternoon tea

Thank you for attending our ‘thank you afternoon tea’. The children thoroughly enjoyed preparing for the afternoon. We covered some of our writing objectives through our letter and invitation writing and some maths ones when working out the amounts of ingredients needed for our baking. Well done to the children for making such delicious delicacies. You did a fabulous job.

Church service and crafts morning

Thank you to Reverend Price for facilitating our service in Church this morning. A big well done to the children for speaking and singing so well. We were all very proud of you.

Reception Admissions – September 2017

The reception class 2017 admission process is still open. Please be aware that the window closes in January. If you have a child who will turn 5 before 31st August 2018, (or know someone who does!) please consider sending them to our fantastic school. I am aware that the online form asks for a UID number. This can be bypassed if you do not have one.

Nursery admissions

As you know, we now offer full day provision to children aged 3 and over in our early years foundation stage. Children can join us the term after their third birthday. Don’t forget, we are also very fortunate to have a private provider onsite offering childcare provision from 18 months. Again, please help us to spread the word.

After school clubs

Our after school clubs this half term were very successful and popular with many. Thanks again to the staff and volunteers who helped make the clubs possible. We will be sending out details of our Spring term clubs when we return.

Well done

You might have seen Mrs Marchant on the back page of the Leek Post. She entered a competition last weekend and won! Well done Mrs Marchant!

Dates for your diary:

I will send home a list of diary dates for the spring term the first week back.

School re-opens Wednesday 4th January 2017. (Tuesday 3rd January – Inset day)

Have a fantastic break and a peaceful and happy Christmas. See you in 2017!

J Ackers

Mrs Ackers and the team

Christmas Fair – Saturday 3rd December 12-2pm.

Tomorrow sees the PTFA’s Christmas fayre return to the school hall. We have had lots of fabulous donations over the last four weeks. Thank you to each and every one of you. We hope you can come along between 12 – 2pm; we are looking forward to having lots of fun whist raising money for our school. Thank you also to those who have volunteered their services to help at the fair and helped with the preparations. We are always very grateful for your help as we couldn’t run the fair without it. Thank you.

We would be grateful if children could be in school for 12:45pm dressed in their school uniform, ready to sing at 1pm.

Raffle tickets

If you require any additional tickets, these are available from the school office. Thank you for all the tickets sold so far.

Santa Steam Train

As you know, we will be going to see Santa on Wednesday morning. The coaches will pick us up and back at school during the normal school day. Therefore, no alternative arrangements need to be made for transport. Please make sure your child has a warm coat, hat and scarf on the day. If you and providing your own packed lunch please make sure it is in a disposable bag. Please do not send fizzy drinks.

After school clubs

After school clubs have now finished for this term. Huge thanks to all those who supported the clubs. Special thanks to the staff and volunteers who made the clubs possible. We wouldn’t have been able to run them without you. We are currently considering what clubs will be on offer after the holidays. If you have any suggestions, please send them to us. We would rather offer clubs that people want, so please do get in touch!

Swimming

Swimming has now finished for this year. Well done to all the children for their hard work in the water.

Years 5/6

As mentioned in a previous letter, we are able to take children for years 5 and 6. We would appreciate it if you could return the form below to give us an idea of interest.

Open morning

We hope you will be able to join us at some point on Tuesday 6th December between 9:30 – 11:30am as we open our doors to the community. Governors will be on hand to give you guided tours and facilitate you seeing us in action. If you know anyone that might be interested in coming to have a nosey, please spread the word!

Parent consultation

As mentioned in previous newsletters, we are holding a public consultation meeting for parents, members of the Parish and those from the wider school community to initiate discussions around the possible development of a play area, running track and exercise facilities within the school grounds. The meeting will be held on Monday 5th December in school at 3:15pm. The meeting will be led by a representative from Proludic, a firm specialising in playground and fitness equipment. We hope you will be able to join us. Please let Thirza or Mrs Virani know if you are able to come so that we know how many to expect. Please also pass the information onto other residents in your village. Everyone is welcome.

Education city

If you are struggling to access Education City, please speak to a member of staff. Accessing the site via chrome seems to work better. We will be seeking your views on the site very shortly as our trial shortly comes to an end.

Christmas Tea and the 5p overcharge!

My sincere apologies again for overcharging you by 5p! Uncollected funds mean we have put 75p into our ACE charity collection.

Nativity tickets

Thanks to all those who have purchased tickets for our Nativity concert on Wednesday 14th December. There are still plenty of tickets available for the afternoon performance (£2 per adult – includes refreshments) and a few for the evening one. If you require additional tickets, please see Mrs Virani ASAP. All proceeds will go directly back into the school fund to help us buy additional resources for the children. Hopefully you will have received your tickets today. If not, please see Mrs Virani ASAP.

15th and 16th December

Next week we will be sending home details about the afternoon of the 15th December. We hope you have managed to keep it free in your diary.

Friday 16th – we will be attending a service in church led by Rev Price, before returning to school for a morning of crafts and an afternoon of dancing. This will be a joint venture between us, pre-school and Manifold Monkeys. The pre-school will be selling raffle tickets for a Christmas hamper on the 16th so please bring some money and support them if you can.

Reception Admissions – September 2017

The reception class 2017 admission process is still open. If you have a child who will turn 5 before 31st August 2018, (or know someone who does!) please consider sending them to our fantastic school.

Don’t forget, we are also very fortunate to have a private provider onsite offering childcare provision from 18 months. Again, please help us to spread the word.

Piano tuition

As mentioned last week, Barbara Fouldes, a Warslow resident, is offering piano tuition (for a small charge – paid directly by the parents) either within the school (at lunchtime or after school) or at her home. For more information, please contact Barbara on 01298 687405 or Mrs Virani in the school office.

Advent

Well done to Zachy and Jacob who are supporting the reverse Advent Calendar during Advent. This is something we hope to support as a school in future years; however, I was concerned that we have been asking you to put your hands in your pockets a great deal lately. The idea behind the project is that you get a basket/box and put an item in each day – building up a food bank/parcel for someone below the breadline. This might be something you feel able to support as a family. It’s never too late to start.

The results are in/Celebrations

Well done to our stars of the week, golden ticket winners and Christian value winners (Peace). You are all superstars.

Christmas Fayre

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas fayre last weekend. Thank you to you all for your donations on our ‘fine days’ and then putting your hands in your pockets and supporting us through buying raffle tickets and goods on the day. Thank you to the volunteers who gave up their time to help us prepare before and on the day. Thank you to the stall holders and reindeers who supported us and helped to draw in members from the wider community. Special thanks to Father Christmas for making time in his busy schedule to come and visit us in person. Well done to the children for singing in front of a crowd. Thanks to Barbara for accompanying us so well on the piano. Without all of your kindness and support the fayre wouldn’t have been as successful as it was. You helped us to raise an incredible £1700! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Santa Steam Train Trip

As you know, we went to see Santa on Wednesday. We all had a great time. It was made even better thanks to the lovely manners and fantastic behaviour demonstrated by all pupils. Thank you for contributing towards the trip - everyone had a great time.

Pantomime

As you know, we are going to Buxton Theatre on Monday 12th December to watch Snow White. Huge thanks to the Robertsons and their company, Sector UK, for funding the trip. We are extremely grateful. Please send a small bag of sweets and a disposable drink (not fizzy) for your child to enjoy during the show. Please make sure you have made travel arrangements for your child(children) after the performance. We will be back at school at approximately 4:45pm.

Norovirus

The Norovirus (winter vomiting bug), seems to be making an appearance in school. As the bug is still infectious for up to 48 hours, if your child suffers from vomiting or diarrhoea they must stay away from school for 48 hours after the last bout of the illness. This will help to reduce the spread of the illness. Please also promote hand washing with your child/children as this will help us to prevent germs spreading. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Open morning

Thank you to those who were able to attend our open morning on Tuesday. We showed 6 people around the school. If you were unable to attend but would like to have a nosey at some point, please let me know and we will arrange something. If you know anyone else that might be interested in coming to have a nosey, please spread the word! It would be lovely to share our work with people and also to see numbers grow at Manifold.

Parent consultation

Thank you to those who were able to attend our public consultation meeting with Mark Jones from Proludic on Monday. It was lovely to welcome Councillor Heath, Kevin Thomson, Park Wildlife ranger - and Rob Faulkner the Chair of the Parish council to the meeting. We also received communications expressing their support for the initiative from other members of the community including Laura

Gordon and The Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP. The general consensus seemed to be that people would be interested in pursuing the idea. We now plan to seek the views of parents and community members – including those covering a wide radius – via a questionnaire. A further meeting in the New Year will then take place with Mark Jones who will draw up some plans following conversations with Peak Park. Please keep everything crossed that they support the idea!

Roman Project

Wow!! What fantastic work Years 3/4 have created for their homework. Their fantastic work will be on display in school for parents to see on Monday 12th December between 4:45 – 5:00pm. We hope you can join us.

Education city

Our trial with education city comes to an end this weekend. Thank you to all those who provided feedback. I have a meeting with one of their consultants on Monday to decide on the next plan of action and to find out more details about what they offer. I will keep you informed once I know more.

Homework this week is:

Early years – practise counting up to and back from 20

Years 1 and 2 – practise number bonds

Years 3 and 4 – practise times tables (up to 12x)

Nativity

The children have been busy preparing for their Nativity concerts on Wednesday 14th December. If your child is not staying for tea, please make sure they are back at school by 5:30pm for the evening performance. After the performance, refreshments will be available (included in the ticket price) while the children gather their belongings. We will then dismiss the children from their classrooms to ensure that all children go home with the appropriate guardians.

15th December

Hopefully you have all received your invite to our ‘Thank you Afternoon Tea’ on Thursday afternoon at 1pm. The children are going to prepare and wait on you as our way of thanking you for your support over the last term. The invite is for 1 adult per child. Please complete and return the attached slip on Monday so that the children can start work on their maths activity – calculating the number of pieces of bread required, the amount of ingredients needed for cakes etc. Please also record any dietary requirements.

Please note there will be no celebration assembly on Thursday morning. We look forward to welcoming you again after the holidays.

16th December 2016

You are all welcome to join us in church at 9:30am for a service led by Rev Price. You are then welcome to join us in school for a morning of crafts and an afternoon of dancing. This will be a joint venture between us, pre-school and Manifold Monkeys. The pre-school will be selling raffle tickets for a Christmas hamper on the 16th so please bring some money and support them if you can.

Treasure hunt

Ever thought of doing a treasure hunt on Christmas Day? Why not go one step further, hide the presents and do a treasure hunt from Father Christmas! Have a look at www.tracetheplace.co.uk. All the clues are free, you don’t have to register and in addition, there are details of how to put it together. It’s not only good fun for the children!

Free singing workshop – Lichfield Cathedral School - Saturday 21st January, 9:30am – 2:00pm. Learn how to sing choral music in Lichfield Cathedral. Please see the attached flyer and booking form for more information. Alternatively, call 01532306168.

Please note – the school does not endorse the above companies, we are merely passing on information.

The results are in/Celebrations

Well done to everyone this week! All children received a special star award for their behaviour during our Santa Steam Train trip. Keep up the good manners!

Dojo winners

Ravenclaw – 1st place

Hufflepuff – 2nd place

Slytherin – 3rd place

Gryffindor – 4th place

Well done to all the children in Gryffindor. They are the overall winners of our Dojo competition this half term. Children in this house team will be rewarded during school time on Tuesday.

On behalf of the team, thank you for your continued support. We are very grateful for everything you do behind the scenes; supporting your child’s education, supporting our behaviour policy, joining us for worship and other school events and raising funds for the school. It really does mean a lot to us all. Thank you!

Christmas Fair – Saturday 3rd December 12-2pm.

Thank you for supporting our ‘fine’ this week. We had a fantastic amount of filled jars sent into school in exchange for wearing fancy dress to school. We had some fantastic costumes on show ranging from a chicken to pirates, princesses and snowmen. Everybody looked fantastic. Well done to all! The only sad part of the day was I felt very old when I realised the children didn’t know Laurel and Hardy or Mary Poppins. I like to still think I’m young!

In order to help us gather 'stock' for the fayre, we will be holding one more fine day. Please remember that these are voluntary donations. If your child does not wish to participate that is absolutely fine.

? Thursday 1st December - In return for a bottle, (any type as long as they are unopened and in date!) children can come to school in their own clothes – preferably with a Christmas theme (Christmas items; jumper, t-shirt, bobbles, socks, ties etc.) Please do not buy anything specially – just use what you have.

We are hoping to include a variety of performances by the children at the school fayre. We are also looking for children to volunteer to help ‘man’ a couple of the stalls. Please complete and return the form below by Tuesday 29th November so that firm plans can be made.

Raffle tickets

Hopefully you have all received some raffle tickets to sell for our Christmas fayre. Please return any monies to school asap. If you require any additional tickets, these are available from the school office.

Staffing

I am sure you will all join me in wishing Mrs Etchells all the best as she finishes at Manifold today. She has been a tremendous force amongst the staff over the last few weeks and built up some great relationships with the children. She will be sorely missed by many. Hopefully we will see her face in the future as she has agreed to help us with any supply teaching needs. Thank you Mrs Etchells. Enjoy your lie in on Monday morning!

Unfortunately, Mrs Harris has been given another sick note today, lasting until 30th December. We hope she is feeling better soon.

Having considered the time of the school year, Mrs Harris’s sick note and the school budget, I have made the decision to put the children into two classes for the last three weeks of term. Early years and year one will work together under the guidance of Miss Perry (3.5 days), Mrs Savage (full time) and me (1.5 days) while years 2,3,4 will work under the guidance of Miss Easter (4.5 days and me 0.5). EY and Y1 will work across the two classrooms, ensuring that all children still receive the kind of provision they need. Operating under this system will enable us to withdraw groups of children out for additional work and concert rehearsals as well as monitoring activities to be carried out by myself. Please be assured that the children’s education and happiness remain at the forefront of any decision making. If you have any questions or concerns, please remember my door is always open.

Open morning

We will be holding an open morning on Tuesday 6th December between 9:30 – 11:30am for current and prospective parents, family, friends and members of the community to see the school in action. Please spread the word!

Reception Admissions – September 2017

The reception class 2017 admission process is still open. If you have a child who will turn 5 before 31st August 2018, (or know someone who does!) please consider sending them to our fantastic school.

Nursery admissions

Don’t forget, we are also very fortunate to have a private provider onsite offering childcare provision from 18 months. Again, please help us to spread the word.

Parent consultation

As mentioned last week, we are holding a public consultation meeting for parents, members of the Parish and those from the wider school community to initiate discussions around the possible development of a play area, running track and exercise facilities within the school grounds. Please note the date change. The meeting will now be held on Monday 5th December in school at 3:15pm. The meeting will be led by a representative from Proludic, a firm specialising in playground and fitness equipment. We hope you will be able to join us.

Education city

Hopefully you all received your child’s login details for Education City last week. We would be very grateful if you would log on and access the site in preparation for giving us your views on the website in a fortnight. Staff have uploaded homework for children to complete online this week. If you have any problems accessing the site, please do not hesitate to contact a member of staff.

Thank you!

On behalf of the British Legion, thank you for raising £65.44 during their poppy appeal. The Leek office raised a grand total of £35,000! What a fantastic achievement.

Christmas Tea and the 5p overcharge!

As mentioned last week, the 5p overpayments (Christmas tea) are now in the office. If you would like yours back, please either ask Mrs Virani or write a note in your child’s communication book. Any 5ps not claimed by the 30th November will go into our school charity box for ACE. My sincere apologies again for overcharging you!

15th and 16th December

If you are able to make space in your diary, we will soon be sending out details of events happening on these dates. Unfortunately, the 15th will be limited to one adult per family, but Friday 16th – the more the merrier. The pre-school will be selling raffle tickets for a Christmas hamper on the 16th so please bring some money and support them if you can.

Piano tuition

We have identified a number of budding musicians in the school over the last few weeks. It would be fantastic if we could nurture and develop these talents. Barbara Fouldes, a Warslow resident, is offering piano tuition (for a small charge – paid directly by the parents) either within the school (at lunchtime or after school) or at her home. For more information, please contact Barbara on 01298 687405 or Mrs Virani in the school office.

Well done to Toby for earning his pen license. I think I might have to go and see him for some extra tuition – as my handwriting is appalling. I should have been a doctor!

Well done to Imogen who has been awarded with her lifeguard badge. What a fantastic achievement. I know who to place myself near if I ever have to accompany the children to their swimming lessons on a Friday morning!

Bench ball tournament

We sent 6 children to represent us in a bench ball tournament on Tuesday morning. They were an absolute credit to the school and their families. Although they didn’t win the overall competition, they can certainly hold their heads up very high. They did a fantastic job, winning one game 9-1! Well done Archie, Cora, Fred, Jack P, Jack Gliddon, & Zachary ! Special thanks to Mrs Marchant, Mrs Gliddon, Mrs Hambleton and Mrs Bennett for taking the children and cheering them on.

Free school meals

If you think you might be eligible for free school meals, please contact Mrs Ackers or Mrs Virani. There always seems to be a stigma around claiming, however, no one else even needs to know! Claiming actually helps the school as it triggers additional funding. Please do not be embarrassed – we are here to support you.
