The Pupil Premium is funding providing to schools which is additional to main school funding. It is allocated according to the number of pupils on roll who are eligible for free school meals, a smaller amount allocated according to the number of children of service families, and an allocation for each pupil who has been ‘Looked After’ (in care) for 6 months or more.
The government believes that the Pupil Premium is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it the most. In 2012, funding was extended to include pupils who have been eligible for free school meals within the past 6 years.
It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, sine they are best placed to asses what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility. However, schools are to be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low income families. Measures in the performance tables capture the achievement of those pupils covered by the Pupil Premium.
From September 2012, this information must be published on the school website. Below is a breakdown on how Pupil Premium is to be spent during 2016-2017.
At the start of the year all teachers met with the principal to discuss their cohort – looking at groups within it, achievement of pupils during the last academic year and areas for development this year.
We received £5,280 during 2016/2017.
How the money will be spent
Ensuring that quality first teaching is taking place in all classes. A robust and rigorous monitoring cycle to be put in place which will focus on pupil progress. In addition, provide appropriate staff training via educational consultant and share ‘in house’ good practice.
Implement a strategic approach ensuring that all teachers are aware of who their Pupil premium children are in their class and what additional support they need and are entitled to. Teachers will use their own knowledge, tracking and assessment data to ensure identified pupils make progress and to request, where applicable, further intervention.
Using tracking data effectively. Analysing tracking data for reading, writing and maths on a half termly basis to determine which children are under performing/exceeding targets and for additional/specialist programmes to be implemented to address these needs.
Support will be given to ensure that all pupils have access to broad educational experiences such as school visits, residential visits, specialist sports coaching and musical tuition.
Monitoring the impact of Pupil Premium
Throughout the year, constant dialogue with teachers and tracking means that pupil premium resources are allocated where and when they are required so to have maximum impact. This will be based on how local, national and Raise Online data is presented.
Feedback to the governing body will be on going throughout the year and a written summary report will be made available in July 2017.
